"The Senate will begin voting on January 24th. Please let them know how you feel.
Sign this petition urging Congress to vote NO on PIPA and SOPA before it is too late."

    Indeed. Thanks, Velsia.

I implore that everyone go sign that petition, or any other similar ones. This isn't just some paranoid internet perusers overreacting, this shit's serious. Hell, even our humble little guild site could get taken down because of an overabundance of copyrighted material.

One more reason why it sucks to be American.

However, apparently Obama doesn't support it and it was already shelved.

But this would affect everything, and it would suck to be anybody...not just Americans.

Ah how I love news that is opinion passed off as reporting.

The bill has not been shelved, however some of the wording and power grabs that are in the bill will be shelved (like DNS blocking from the ISP, and the abolishment of the safe harbor act). Make no mistake though SOPA will, in one form or another, pass.

Obama was very very careful not to say we dont support SOPA, but said the white house will not support any legislation that "reduces freedom of expression, increases cybersecurity risks or undermines the dynamic, innovative global internet."

Once SOPA is chopped down so the white house no longer feels it undermines any of the aforementioned points it will go into law.

Edit: I should probably say that I am against this bill as well. I believe in self government, unfortunately laws will always be made for the lowest common denominator.

Exactly. None of that is specific.

The same thing happened with his healthcare bill stuff: Something had to be done about US healthcare, his system was a pretty drastic change, but something had to be done...so on it went.

Something similar will happen with SOPA/PIPA: Since SOPA was already made to look like the bad guy, PIPA--while still drastic as it stands--will look like nothing compared to SOPA. They'll say "something needs to be done" rather than nothing, and PIPA or something similar will pass if people don't make too much of a fuss about it.

Which is exactly why, regatdless of what anyone says, people need to continue making a fuss about it. And a pretty big fuss at that.
